We thought private school was only for rich families. My son got 80% of tuition covered. I still keep the letter in my bag.

Our Story

Built by a student who had to figure it out.

In 2024, Jackson was deep into his high school applications and thought about how fortunate he was to have support throughout the process. He started Vola Schools so that other kids like him would also get their fair chance.

Questions families ask

Straight answers, no small print.

Here are some questions parents often ask about private high schools. We hope that they help you decide if it is the right fit for your family.

When should we start the application process?+

Most families start visiting schools and researching options about a year before they want their child to enroll — often the fall before the school year they’re applying for. Deadlines vary by school, so check directly with each admissions office for exact dates.

What documents or materials do we need to apply?+

Common items include a completed application, recent report cards or transcripts, a recommendation letter or two, and sometimes a short essay or interview. Each school's admissions office can give you the exact checklist.

How does financial aid work, and when do we apply for it?+

Financial aid is a grant, not a loan — you don't pay it back. And you don't need savings or money in the bank to qualify. Schools look at what your family can reasonably afford based on income and household size, not what you have saved. Financial aid is a separate process from the school application, with its own form and deadline — often around the same time as the application deadline. Each school sets its own aid budget, so the admissions office is the best place to ask about specifics.

Is private school even an option for a family like ours, or is it only for people who were born here?+

Yes. Private school is an option for all kinds of families, including immigrant families and families with modest incomes, not just people born in the U.S. or families with high incomes. Many students attend with financial aid covering part of the cost. Vola Schools exists to help families explore these options.

What are schools looking for in an application?+

Schools generally look at more than grades — they also consider things like a student's interests, character, and whether the school feels like a good fit. There's no single formula, and it varies by school, so it's worth asking the admissions office what they value most.

Do we need test scores, and which tests are accepted?+

Some schools require an entrance exam or standardized test, and others don't. When a test is required, the admissions office will tell you which one and how to register.

Do we need to be U.S. citizens or a certain immigration status to apply?+

No. Private schools generally do not require citizenship or a specific immigration status to apply. Schools are focused on a child's education. Families with questions specific to their situation can speak privately with an admissions office.

Can we visit or tour before applying?+

Yes — most schools encourage this, often through an open house or a scheduled tour, so your family can see the school firsthand before deciding to apply. Reach out to the admissions office to find upcoming visit dates.

Every family deserves a fair shot.

Your child's next school is out there. Let's find it together — a volunteer beside you, in your language, at no cost.
